"Mercury is difficult to see from Earth because it is the closest of all the planets to the sun. The sun's brightness interferes with Earth-bound observers' ability to see Mercury in the sky. In fact, on some days, it is only possible to see Mercury at twilight time. Mercury's proximity to the sun, together with the fact that it is so small (the second smallest of all the planets) renders its gravitational field weak -- it can't even hold on to gases. Consequently, Mercury has no atmosphere."
