I need to know for homework. For example, what about this problem:

x^3 - 4x^2 + 6x - 4

That specific problem is not one I have to do, but it's similar. I am having an extremely hard time trying to understand how to do it, and it doesn't help that I struggle at factoring. Please try to be as specific as possible helping me.
Is there any way to determine one of the roots besides guessing and checking?

first put some values for x.. like put x=1
(1-4+6-4) is not zero.  So x=1 is not a root.

then put x=2
(8-16+12-4) is zero.  Therefore x=2 is a root for the above equation.

do the division of the above equation by (x-2) then you'll get quadratic equation.
