Differential stress builds up on both sides of a fault. Frictional force between the fault blocks keeps the rocks in place. Over time, this causes the rock to bend, much like how a diving board will bend under a person's weight. Eventually, the stress along the fault overcomes the friction holding rocks in place and slip begins. This allows the deformed rock to snap back to its original shape.
