1) Lipid soluble
Steroid hormones are synthesized from cholesterol, are made in the mitochondria or Smooth endoplasmic reticulum. They are hydrophobic, therefore they can diffuse through the plasma membrane of cells and bind to intracellular receptors or receptors embedded in organelles. Their effect on the target cell is slow

2) Water soluble
Protein hormones (Prohormones) are hydrophillic and cannot actively pass through the cell membrane. They bind to trans membrane proteins on the cell membrane and have rapid effects
