What is a hypothesis? What are the steps involved in following the scientific method? How does one distinguish the dependent variable from the independent variable in an experiment? How are each of these represented on a graph?

What is a hypothesis:
A hypothesis is a proposition about some idea that is then further tested through experiment. The experiment will either prove or disprove it.

Steps in the Scientific Method:
1. Ask a question
2. Make an observation
3. Form a hypothesis
4. Test through experiment
5. Analyze your data
6. Determine if hypothesis is proved or disproved
7. If necessary, propose a new hypothesis

Dependent vs. Independent:
The independent variable is what is being changed in order to see its effects on the dependent variable. The dependent variable is what is being measured, and always stays the same throughout the experiment.

Represented on graph:
The dependent variable is the one on the Y axis (vertical axis). The independent variable is shown on the X axis (horizontal axis).
