Compare and contrast the philosophies and tactics of the Knights of Labor and the American Federation of Labor. Why, in the long run, did one group succeed while the other one failed?

1. The Knights of Labor aimed at organizing all workers.
2. The Knights of Labor avoided strikes at the national level.
3. However, at the local level the Knights of Labor had strikes and was associated with radicalism and failed.
4. The American Federation of Labor focused more on craft workers.
5. The American Federation of Labor generally ignored women and minorities. It did well with skilled workers, but lost in some industries like steel.
