Humans (both sexes) have a total of 26 vertebrae.  There are 7 cervical (neck region) vertebrae; the first two are sometimes called the atlas and the axis.  Then come the 12 thoracic (chest region) vertebrae, and the 5 lumbar (lower back) vertebrae.  The last portion is the sacrum, or the 5 sacral vertebrae, which are fused into one structure.

Interestingly, there is a structure at the bottom of the human vertebral column called the coccyx, is sometimes considered part of the the column.  It is composed of 3 to 5 fused vertebrae, and is the remnants of a tail!

You have 7 cervical. 12 thoracic. 5 lumbar. As well as the sacrum and coccyx [tail bone.] Easiest way to remember the amount is something my teacher taught us years ago; you have breakfast at 7 [the cervical] lunch at 12 [thoracic] and dinner at 5 [lumbar]

Hope this helped.
