As part of an experiment for my biology coursework, I am comparing the different effects on germination with different concentrations of peat. I've used 100% peat, 90%, 40-70% and peat-free composts. I left the seeds to germinate for a week in a heated propagator, and when the seeds had germinated the ones in the 100% peat came through a lot smaller than the others and with shriveled, yellowing leaves. What would have caused this? I know peat has higher levels of nutrients than the smaller concentrations, but the 90% peat seeds came through a lot more healthily, and the 40-70% came through the best (peat free didn't come through amazingly, but still better than 100%). Does the higher amount of nutrients in the 100% overwhelm the seeds and cause this worse look? Or is it another reason?
