I just learnt this in intro chemistry.

Ionic compounds are typically formed between the anions and cations of metallic and nonmetallic elements. For example NaCl is formed from sodium, which is a metal, and chlorine, which as a gas/halogen is a non-metal.

Most often, elements within the transition metals, the actinides, and the lanthanides have variable charges in their cations.
