When administering oxygen via nasal prongs to a client, the nurse should:

  1. apply water-soluble lubricant to the prongs before inserting.
  2. position nasal prongs into client's nares with curves of prongs pointing toward the floor of the nostrils.
  3. tape the cannula tubing to the client's face.
  4. lubricate the prongs with petroleum jelly before inserting.
