The nurse should use a humidifier when the client has been receiving more than 4 L/min of oxygen over an extended period. A humidifier is a device that produces small water droplets and may be used during oxygen administration because oxygen dries the mucous membranes. In most cases, oxygen is humidified only when more than 4 L/min is administered for an extended period. When humidification is desired, a bottle is filled with distilled water and attached to the flowmeter.
