A builder is planning to build approximately ten new homes on a parcel of land. The local zoning regulations require that the builder set aside some of the property for open, green space for animal habitat. The builder could set aside one large parcel for the green space or he could set aside many, smaller plots. Which might be considered the best choice, from the point of view of a conservation biologist?
a. The larger plot is preferable because it could allow for more interbreeding and less edge effects.
b. There really is no difference between the two options.
c. The isolated plots are preferable because they spread out the habitat.
d. The larger plot is preferable because the isolated plots are more vulnerable to edge effects.
e. The smaller plots are preferable as they will create more interbreeding in many species.
