As a biologist, you either either sound very smart, funny, or both. Here are some words that are thrown around in biology classes quite a lot; whether you're taking a class in biology, anatomy or any other branch of biology, chances are you've heard or used these words.

Mastication: To chew

Proboscis: The nose of a mammal or elongated sucking mouthpart

Gamete: A reproductive cell, such as a sperm cell or egg

Hematoma: A solid swelling of clotted blood within the tissues

Coccyx: Tailbone

Bolus: A ball-like mixture of food and saliva that forms in the mouth during the process of chewing

I have always loved the word mastication ever since I read Gulp Adventurers on the Alimentary Canal by Mary Roach and learned about the interesting parts of digestion. Bolus is a fun word too.
