First, on which neurotransmitters do drugs (viz., drug categories) that produce psychoactive, or psychotropic, effects act?  Second, describe the (proposed) relationship among stress, cortisol, and the hippocampus.  Use Kolb and Whishaw’s (2013) textbook as a source, and cite it appropriately.

The hippocampus plays an important role in ending the stress response by regulating cortisol levels.

If cortisol remains elevated by prolonged stress, eventually it damages the hippocampus. (it can create a feedback loop, because then hippocampus is damaged and cannot detect high levels of cortisol, carries on, etc.).
