Reviewing for ochem final. Circled this problem a while back.

When answering, please explain how, and not just the answer. I already have the answer. I want to understand why.

Here's a similar question with an explanation. First attachment is the question itself, the second attachment is what came with the answer.

For assigning E and Z configuration we need to compare the groups attached to the double bond on both sides

first structure left side if u compare both groups the keto group gets highest priority (a) and the methyl group is having lower priority(b). the right side -CH2OH group gets highest priority (a) and H gets lower priority(b) if both a's and b's are on same side then the structure is in Z- configuration. if both a's and b's are on opposite side then the structure is in E- configuration.first structure is in E configuration second is in Z-configuration
