once a foreign gene has been inserted into a plasmid dna to form a recombinant plasmid, what would be the next step if you were to continue the model of recombinant dna technology?

After obtaining recombinant plasmids,

1) Mix bacteria and r. plasmids together
2) Add cold CaCl2 followed by a brief heat shock to induce competency in the bacteria (this would cause temporary pores in bacterial membrane and Ca^2+ ion will stabilise it. Then plasmids can go in)
3) Check if the bacteria
     a) took in any plasmids
     b) took in r. plasmids or untransformed plasmids
to do (3), you need to know the selectable markers in the plasmid itself.

Hope this helps:)
