A six-carbon phosphosugar, which is an intermediate in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, fructose 6-phosphate (F6P) is a phosphate ester of fructose. Fructose 6-phosphate is produced in glycolysis by the enzyme phosphoglucose isomerase, which acts on the substrate glucose 6-phosphate, converting the latter's six-membered pyranose ring to a five-membered furanose ring. In glycolysis, fructose 6-phosphate is further phosphorylated to form fructose 1,6-bisphosphate (FBP). This highly regulated step is catalyzed by phosphofructokinase (PFK). In gluconeogenesis, FBP is hydrolyzed to fructose 6-phosphate by the enzyme fructose 1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase). F6P is also a substrate of reactions catalyzed by transaldolase and transketolase, and is used by plants to synthesize sucrose.
