Definition for N-acetylglutamate
From Biology Forums Dictionary
In ureotelic animals (see urea cycle), the glutamine hydrolysis domain of carbamoyl phosphate synthetase I (CPS I) has been adapted to a regulatory function. The binding of N-acetylglutamate to a modified glutamine site stimulates the activity of CPS I. Amino acid N-acetyltransferase catalyzes the formation of N-acetylglutamate.
Another enzyme glutamate N-acetyltransferase catalyzes the reaction
2-N-acetyl-L-ornithine + L-glutamate <=> L-ornithine + N-acetyl-L-glutamate
This enzyme is important in organisms carrying out arginine biosynthesis using the acetyl cycle.
