An activated derivative of glucose that is activated for biosynthetic reactions such as glycogen synthesis and production of sucrose in plants. UDP-glucose is formed from glucose 1-phosphate and uridine triphosphate (UTP) in a reaction catalyzed by glucose 1-phosphate uridylyltransferase.
