My name is Carriel Clanton, I am a Psychology major. I chose Psychology because I have been a people’s person and I love to see how people interact and react to things. The study of the human mind and behavior really interests me. What makes my major a social science is that it’s not exactly a science but when you look at the definition of science and maybe compare it to some of the things that Psychologists do, and their findings and research may be referred to as scientific. My own definition of social science by just listening to it would be sciences that communicate and maybe correspond with each other. My major is the definition of social science in my opinion. It is exactly how it sounds, a social science. In Psychology you communicate with others to know what is going on with them to diagnose them and resolve the problems that they may be having. I had to do a research on how different things that may happen in people’s life can define who they turn out to be. Whether it was a dramatic trauma or something small that left an enormous impact on them. If I had to break this up the research was the social part of that and science is the diagnosing part. To find out the problem you must know the behaviors and the signs. It could be like science and you can create a hypothesis first and then move forward, but the same time its not, with this you must know what it is and be sure of it.
Some issues that my discipline interact with every day I would say are behavioral issues and mental health. This is not speaking on an advanced level of those two issues its more like seeing someone during your day and they may have an attitude or they maybe sad. Not saying that this is a big deal, but it was something that went wrong with their emotions to cause them to feel that way and sometimes while this may happen with us and some of our friends, it can sometimes be complicated for us to make them feel better depending on how deep the sadness or pain may be. Moving forward, the difference in my practice when it comes to practice vs. theory is that is Psychology for one it is this exact way in Psychology. You must practice first before you come up with a theory. This can even be in general with the two, but in Psychology this is the order. A perfect example for this is when maybe someone maybe bipolar or schizophrenia. They may act out first and then you will have to see what caused that, so it already happened but now you must come up with a theory on why this person is acting this way. I was told a story when sitting in one of my Psychology classes one day about a young boy with behavior issues. The boy would act out and do terrible things to other kids and was very mindless. One day the boy had written a letter to Satan and changed his name. he addressed himself as someone else and some of the writing was normal and the other half they were not able to tell the writing but they boy was. Its crazy what the note had said from the little that they could read. The instructor had told us that later that day when his mom came to pick him up that it was this look in eyes, almost as if whatever was in him had left him when he saw his mom. His manners had come back, and it was like nothing had happened. When it comes to addressing the issues on homeless when it comes to theory vs. practice is that it’s a tug of war kind of argument because no one with their right mind would possibly chose to be homeless but then again, some people do. It can be sort of confusing, but no one practices being homeless. On the other hand, we cannot control the rate of poverty. There’s a theory that when we build more communities even if its low budget or in a bad community, that the homeless rate would go down. The practice would be more of how to help the homeless to work and pay for the homes. Even though that is not the cast the most time, but it is a good theory.
