Owen Ostberg Dr. Roberta Newbury BIO 200 Ecology 23 April 2018 Human Life Tables Lab Use EXCEL to produce a survivorship curve and attach it to this lab report. Comment on the type of survivorship curve observed. At what age does median life expectancy (lx = 0.50) occur? The survivorship curve observed is a type 1. At age 71 to 80 is when the median life expectancy occurs in males and in females its 81 to 85. Can you make any predictions about human population growth from your data? If this were a representative sample, is human population growing, declining, or remaining stable. Based on your knowledge, does your data model the real world? In females the population is expected to grow because the “r est” value is above zero at a 0.00654. the population of males is also expected to grow with am “r est” value of 0.006354. This data does follow the real world because the earth’s population is slowly increasing. How many years are between generations in your data? Does this seem to be representative? The average time between generations is 28.70257 for males and 28.76852 for females. All in all the average generation gap is almost 29 years. This data does seem to be representative. How might your data differ if you limited your observations to headstones for people born before 1850? What other limitations can you suggest to this technique? In 1850 and surrounding years, people were getting married and having kids earlier. There were also more children per house hold. Therefore. The “G” value would be smaller, and the “r est” value would be larger. People might also not have lived as long therefore the “lx” value would not be strung along so many age classes.
