Please make sure to check the schedule on the Student Portal. Also note that the final exam is cumulative. GRADE DISTRIBUTION In this course, the following grading system is used: Letter Grade Percentage A+ 90-100% A 80-89.9% B+ 74-79.9% B 68-73.9% C+ 62-67.9% C 56-61.9% D 50-55.9% F 0-49.9% Any changes to the above breakdown will always be to the benefit of the students. For example, if class performance is less than expected the range limits may be reduced slightly (e.g. A+ ? 88%, A = 78 – 87.9%, etc.). All final grades are subject to department approval. DEFERRED EXAMS All examinations must be written during the scheduled exam time, except under very exceptional circumstances (e.g. serious illness). Missing an examination is serious. There are many ways your Instructor can accommodate you and the options are up to the Instructor and the Department. Writing a make-up test at your convenience may not be one of these options. When a student misses a final exam because of exceptional circumstances, the student must contact the College within two business days of the scheduled exam date and provide ICM with a written explanation, including all available documentary evidence to support the reason for absence. Please consult the Student Academic Handbook for more information about Deferred Tests and Examinations. QUALIFYING FOR A DEFERRED EXAM: In order for students to qualify to write a deferred final exam, students must have 1) documentation to support the reason they missed the regular exam seating, submitted within two business days of the exam, 2) attended 80%+ of their term’s classes, and 3) attempted/passed all term assessments.   Students who do not attend class are at risk of not getting a deferred exam approved if they are unable to write on the actual exam date. Please be sure to check your exam schedule very carefully. If you miss a final exam for any reason, please see an advisor immediately. If you have documented reasons for exam accommodations, please see an advisor immediately. LABORATORY The objective of the lab is to enhance the lecture material. Six labs are scheduled throughout the term during the laboratory time slot: THURSDAY (room 305 BSB – Biological Science Building) Section 1: 6:00-7:50 pm Section 2: 8:00-9:50 pm Worksheets will be distributed to the students at the start of each lab (please note that you do NOT need to purchase a lab coat or manual as all necessary materials will be provided). The preliminary lab schedule is given as follows- YOU MUST CHECK THE MOODLE FOR LAB DATES AS THESE ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE: SCHEDULED LAB DATES: 1- JANUARY 31 LAB #1: Introduction to the Microscope 2- FEBRUARY 7 LAB #2: Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic Cells 3- FEBRUARY 21 LAB #3: Plant & Animal Cells 4- MARCH 7 LAB #4: Microscope LIVE 5- MARCH 21 LAB #5: Lab tutorial: Cell Division & Homologous Chromosomes 6- APRIL 4 LAB #6: Lab tutorial: Mendelian Genetics, DNA Replication ELECTRONIC AND MECHANICAL DEVICES Students will require regular access to the course Moodle to access assignment outlines, class information, email and grades. Computers may be useful in class for taking notes, but are not required. Cellphone use during class is not permitted. Recording of lectures and class discussions (by any means) is not permitted unless a student is registered with Student Accessibility Services and has a disability that requires this support. STUDENT ACCESSIBILITY SERVICES ICM and the University of Manitoba are committed to providing all students equal access to learning opportunities. “This means that our classroom, our virtual spaces, our practices, and our interactions should be as inclusive as possible. Mutual respect, civility, and the ability to listen and observe others carefully are crucial to universal learning.” Student Accessibility Services (SAS) is the office that works with students who have permanent, chronic, or temporary disabilities to provide and/or arrange reasonable accommodations.  Students who have, or think they may have, a disability (e.g. mental health, attentional, learning, vision, hearing, physical, medical or temporary), are invited to contact Student Accessibility Services to arrange a confidential discussion at (204) 474-7423 (V), (204) 474- 9790 (TTY) or student_accessibility@umanitoba.ca. Students registered with Student Accessibility Services and who have a letter requesting accommodations are encouraged to contact the instructor early in the semester to discuss the accommodations outlined in their letter. Additional information is available at the Student Accessibility Services website: www.umanitoba.ca/student/saa/accessibility/ ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY Academic Integrity refers the values on which good academic work must be founded: honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility. The policy is available in the Student Academic Handbook, accessible on Student Portal.
