How does this song made you feel? At first few times I have listen the song makes me feel a lot of strong emotions as proud of sacrifice and brave of soldiers in Vietnam War 1960s. However, I also feel confusion and wonder that was a good decision to take part in the war? Why we don’t choose different solution without war. What ideas are the writer concerned about? -He was protesting the Vietnam war and he criticize about blind patriotism and militarism in the United States. Identify something new you learned from the song? -I have learned from the song that fighting is not a good way to solve problems. -We have to recognize which orders are good to follow and should not do it in blind loyalty. Identify specific lyrics that made you think about something you wouldn’t have thought about otherwise? -Lyric: “Is there anybody here who’d like to wrap a flag around an early grave” - Almost soldiers who take part in the war is very young, they are at the age for going to university and college. Nobody can make sure all of soldiers can come back home because the war is a symbol of death and suffering. These soldiers can die when they are really young and nobody or any family want their sons, their brothers die as a young age when they still have a long future if thy do not enjoy the war. - They are students and they can improve the country other ways by knowledge. Identify specific lyrics that were puzzling or confusing to you? -Lyric: “Is there anybody here who wouldn’t mind a murder by another name” - I was confused these soldiers have to fight for their country by killing the enemies. However, killing people can be called murder so criminals who have committed a crime as a killer, can be they called soldiers? -In other way, soldier who fight for country can be called murders. -Lyric: “Is there anybody here who thinks that following the orders takes away the blame” -I wonder what the blame are they talking about? Will people get blame when they do not enjoy the war as a responsibility of citizens with the country? Or the complain of other people when you are not do things they want. How does the song fit into the broader social, cultural, political and economic characteristics of the decade? -The song relates to anti-Vietnam war protests.
