Evaluating a Case Study in Public Health HS315: Professor Charles Daniel A brief overview of the Ten Essential Public Health Services Public Health Services monitor health status to identify community health problems. They also diagnose and investigate health problems and health hazards in the community. Informing, educating, and empowering people about health issues are also done by the public health services. In addition, the public health services mobilize community partnerships to identify and solve health problems. They also develop policies and plans that support individual and community health efforts. Again they enforce laws and regulations that protect health and ensure safety. Linking people to needed personal health services and ensure the provision of health care when otherwise unavailable is a duty of the public health services. They ensure a competent public health and personal health care workforce. Public health services evaluate effectiveness, accessibility, and quality of personal and population-based health services. Lastly they conduct research for new insights and innovative solutions to health problems (Sollecito W. A., 2013). Using the case study you chose for the Unit 1 Discussion, describe which of the ten essential services the case study fits into and how.I chose the case study 2 from the course digital book titled: A Feasibility Study of Routine Screening for HIV in an Urban Emergency Department. This case study explains the need for George Washington’s hospital to conduct HIV screening to every patient that comes to the hospital from the emergency department or main hospital because they are aware of the high rate of people living with HIV without knowing that they are infected. If people know their HIV status, they will not only adhere to treatment but will also make god life style changes that will increase their life span and also reduce or limit the number of new HIV cases. Although this case study was not for everyone who came to George Washington’s hospital because of consent like the old, foreigners and people who needed urgent medical intervention, the research did a lot to make people know their HIV status (Hunting K., 2012) One of the essential public health services that fits into this case study is the fact that they monitor health status to identify community health problems. They also diagnose and investigate health problems and health hazards in the community. They do this by screening the patients with the rapid test strips and kit provided by the District of Colombia Medical Department and with the help of Priya, a student was assigned to group the data of the results into three groups ranging from the old, the young and children. When they get these data, it will help monitor the number of patients infected with HIV in the community and a follow up and investigation treatment can continue forward to help these patients do confirmatory tests, treatment plans and also to help them choose life style changes that will limit spread and make them live longer.
