Classmates, I feel that the violation of moral and ideal standards is one of the more valid criteria for abnormal behavior. Freud’s Psychoanalytic Theory tells us that there is a clear disconnect from our Id to ego and even more so from our ego to superego (Argosy, 0214). The reasoning for this being so critical is found in the example given of not providing for offspring and parents abandoning their children. This endangers those who rely on others for care and are unable to care for themselves. This could ultimately lead to death of the child if the situation is not corrected. My second choice for importance of validity is unpredictability. Given that these individuals tend to act erratically (Gerrig, 2012) makes any environment potentially unsafe. If it cannot be expected or predicted how an individual is going to react in normal circumstances or social situations, then it is a danger to the individual and those around them. My first least important is observer discomfort (Gerrig, 2012). Given the example of carrying on a loud conversation down the middle of the sidewalk and making others uncomfortable is not harmful. We have a tremendous amount of individuals in my community like this. It is not even that individuals are scared has much as the get irritated with the individuals unfortunately. There is not really any harm that they cause to themselves or anyone else. In an extreme sense they may not pay attention and you must watch them at intersections for example, but overall everything is essentially safe. My second choice is Unconventionality and statistical rarity. The definition is simply the difference in individuals having something that is desired by others or not desired by others (Gerrig, 2012). There is ultimately not any danger in the diagnosis unless another criteria for abnormal behavior is present as well causing an individual to act irrationally to achieve what is desired. Chad
