Final Paper PSY 440: Addictive Behaviors The following conceptual applications will provide exposure to the stories of people who have overcome addictive behaviors in a variety of ways and the opportunity to apply the concepts we have learned this semester. Being able to apply the concepts in such a way is one way of fostering deeper understanding of addictive behaviors. The conceptual applications involve chapters from Anne Fletcher's Sober for Good. Although no conceptual application is directly focused on Chapter 1, you might find the other chapters make more sense if you have read that chapter. You can choose any three of the five conceptual applications listed below. Each conceptual application is worth 20 points, for a total of 60 points, and the Conceptualizing Success in the Course exercise brings the total to 65 points. Each conceptual application should be typed and no longer than 3 pages in length (double-spaced, 1-inch margins, 12-point font). Each conceptual application should start on a separate page and be clearly labeled. They can then be stapled together in numerical order. As usual, the level of understanding and insightfulness demonstrated will be the main determinant of your grade. Conceptual Application 1. Apply the behavioral (learning) concepts regarding substance abuse cessation to one or more of the stories in Chapter 4. Conceptual Application 2. Apply the Stages of Change model to one or more of the stories in Chapter 5. Include discussion of whether the individual seemed to follow the stages and what factors led to making the transition from one stage to the next. Conceptual Application 3. After reading about the different approaches to gaining sobriety in Chapter 6 and the Appendix, discuss which approach(es) you think would work best for you and why. Also discuss which approach(es) you think would be least effective for you and explain why. Conceptual Application 4. Apply the concepts of Motivational Interviewing to the advice to friends and family offered in Chapter 7. Conceptual Application 5. Apply the concepts of Relapse Prevention to stories presented in Chapters 9 and 10. Conceptualizing Success in the Course (5 points). Based on your experience in this class, what advice would you give future students who wish to succeed in PSY 440? Organize your advice so that it can be used in a future "Strategies for Success from Former PSY 440 Students" section in Blackboard.
