Tyler Shiltz Sarah Crump M. A., M.F.A ENGL 1102 23 January 2020 WC: 429 Silent but Deadly Silent Spring by Rachel Carson brings to light how harmful humans can be to the planet. Things humans do every day contributes to the poisoning of the environment. Global warming is real, and it is a much bigger problem than most people realize. If nations don’t act soon, it will be too late. A lot of countries are taking the necessary steps to reverse the damage already caused, the United States should follow the lead to help make this planet beautiful and healthy again. In a beautiful small-town in America, life once flourished with colorful trees and lush green fields spread across the land. Things took a dramatic turn over the years when people started to get sick and animals and plants were starting to die. Pesticides and other pollution poison the streams and air, causing a ripple effect killing off vegetation and throwing off earth’s natural balance. The town from this book doesn’t exist, but it is rather foreshadowing that numerous other towns in this country are suffering from the things above. In one paragraph Rachel Carson mentions, "the people had done it themselves", meaning that people have caused these problems and continue to cause them. Another interesting piece of information is when Carson states, “Since the mid-1940s over 200 basic chemicals have been created for use in killing insects, weeds, rodents, and other organisms described in the modern vernacular as ‘pests’; and they are sold under several thousand different brand names.” Millions of people all over the world use these chemicals everyday for various reasons, not knowing the horrible effect it has on our environment. Deadlier chemicals need to be found all the time because eventually things start to build a resistance to these chemicals, which means a deadlier chemical must be used. It is a back and forth battle with nature and mankind, a war if you will. Things must change drastically if humans want to reverse the deadly effects that have already been caused. The lasting effect of pesticides and chemicals will serve as a reminder of the damage brought on by the selfishness of people and businesses alike. Today stores are still selling these chemicals to the general public with no remorse for the damage they cause. However, they do come with warning labels describing how to ‘properly’ use and dispose of them. Hopefully one day someone will step up and fight to help bring an end to this chemical warfare that was started so long ago.
