Fluid compartments in a typical vertebrate.

Description
Most of the fluid within an animal's body exists within cells (intracellular fluid). Extracellular fluid is that portion of the body's fluid that lies outside cells (interstitial fluid) and within blood vessels (plasma). Arrows indicate directions of water movement between adjacent compartments.
