Differences in reproductive strategies.

Description
Species such as (a) agave plants are semelparous, meaning they breed once in their lifetime and then die (century plant, Agave shawii, Baja, California). This contrasts with (b) pileated woodpeckers, Dryocopus pileatus, found in the boreal forests of Canada, and (c) chimpanzees, Pan troglodytes, Chimfunshi Chimp Reserve, Zambia, which are iteroparous and breed more than once in their lifetime.
