Treponema pallidum

Description
This is Treponema pallidum. It is the causative agent of syphilis. The bacteria are spirochetes, so they appear as long “kinky” strands. This genus does not stain well so we use a special stain called silver nitrate. The bacterial cells appear as black and the surrounding tissue and cells are yellow.
