Steric interactions determine peptide conformation

Description
A sterically nonallowed  conformation (a).

The f = Oo and y = Oo conformation, is not allowed in any polypeptide chain because of the steric crowding between the carbonyl oxygen and amido proton.

The atoms in a helix are closely packed as shown in the a-helix on the right from myoglobin.
