Crystal structures of SecY complex in “closed” and “open” conformations

Description
Side view, looking toward the “exit,” of SecY from M. jannaschii in the closed conformation.
Top view looking down the protein channel in the closed conformation.
Top view of SecY from P. furiosus in the open conformation.
The two red helices have moved apart, opening a gap that runs the length of the channel and allows the nascent peptide sequence in the translocon access to the hydrophobic core of the membrane.
