Xylem vessels

Description
Perforated and pitted secondary walls of dead vessel member cells form these water-conducting tubes, which vary in size and in shape.

A Pits in the side walls of adjoining vessel members match up, so water can flow between adjacent tubes as well as upward through them. The micrograph shows a longitudinal section of corn (Zea mays). The rows of pits are contact faces where vessel elements meet side-to-side.
