Life cycle of a fern

Description
1) The familiar leafy green plant is a diploid sporophyte.
2) Meiosis in sporangia on underside of fronds yields haploid spores.
3) Spores germinate and develop into tiny haploid gametophytes that pro-duce eggs and sperm by mitosis.
4) Sperm swim to eggs and a fertilization occurs.
5) The sporophyte begins its development attached to the gametophyte, but it continues to grow and live independently after the gametophyte dies
