For each chromosome type in the body, there are two copies. One is from the mother, and one is from the father. Therefore, for each gene in the body, there are two copies. Each copy of the same gene type is called an allele.

Starting on the left, two chromosomes are paired. chromosome 1 from mother and chromosome 1 from father. From each of these chromosomes, two genes on the D N A extend, labeled gene for kidney function, and gene for skin pigment.
