Reaction against infection. Pathogens may invade the body by a pierce through the skin. The result of invasion is the proliferation of pathogens within body tissues, or infection. The body responds to the infection by mounting an attack that begins with inflammation, which promotes the movement of phagocytes to the site of the infection. Phagocytes localize the pathogens and destroy them by phagocytosis. Pus is released, which is composed of dead bacteria and phagocytes.
