During the Pullman strike in Chicago, workers protesting wage cuts did $340,000 in property damage, chiefly by burning freight cars. Several years later, Debs declared that the central issue confronting the nation was the “enslaving and degrading wage-system” in which workers toiled “for a pittance” and were “bludgeoned, jailed or shot” when they protested.
