A schematic diagram of the functional cycle of the Na+–K+ pump

Description
The subunit is believed to have two states:
one open only to the outside (brown
one open only to the inside (blue)

A dot between two symbols indicates noncovalent binding, a line indicates covalent attachment and (as in phosphorylation).

Cardiotonic steroids (e.g., digoxin) inhibit the Na+–K+ pump, resulting in increased Ca2+ ion concentration in heart muscle, which, in turn, leads to stronger contractions of the heart muscle.
