a. A nononcogenic virus.

b. An oncogenic virus such as Rous sarcoma virus, showing the viral oncogene downstream (rightward) from the viral replication genes.

c. A defective oncogenic virus, such as Moloney murine sarcoma virus, with the viral oncogene replacing part or all of a gene (env) essential to viral replication.

In each case the LTRs are direct repeats, flanked by short inverted repeats.
