In the sugar-phosphate backbone, sugar molecules are shown in blue and phosphate groups are shown in yellow. This backbone is on the outermost surface of the double helix. The atoms of the bases, shown in green, are more internally located within the double-stranded structure. Notice the major and minor grooves that are formed by this arrangement.
