(a) The primary structure is the amino acid sequence, represented by the peptide units. (b) Hydrogen bonding between amino acids in the polypeptide chain can form a pleated sheet, an alpha helix, or a random coil. (c) Folding of the secondary structures into a functional three-dimensional shape creates the tertiary level of structure. Some functional proteins are made up of more than one polypeptide chain, and this level is the quaternary structure (not shown here).
