Four butterflies, two species: Which are which? The top row shows two forms of the species Heliconius melpomene; the bottom row, two forms of Heliconius erato. H. melpomene and H. erato never cross-breed. Their alternate but similar patterns of coloration evolved as a shared warning  signal to predatory birds that these butterflies taste terrible
