1 Earth’s atmosphere reflects some sunlight energy back into space.

2 More light energy reaches and warms Earth’s surface.

3 Earth’s warmed surface emits heat energy. Some of this energy escapes through the atmosphere into space. The rest is absorbed and then emitted in all directions by greenhouse gases. Some emitted heat warms Earth’s surface and lower atmosphere. Figure It Out: Do greenhouse gases reflect heat energy toward the Earth?
