Inward Outward flow of air flow of air A Inhalation. Diaphragm contracts, B Exhalation. Diaphragm, external moves down. External intercostal intercostal muscles return to resting muscles contract, lift rib cage upward positions. Rib cage moves down. and outward. Lung volume expands. Lungs recoil passively.
