Main mechanism of carbon dioxide transport and exchange. A lesser amount of CO2 travels to the lungs

Description
A) At a systemic capillary bed:
1. CO2 diffuses from a body cell into plasma, then into a red blood cell.
2. Carbonic anhydrase catalyses formation of bicarbonate (HCO3–).
3. Bicarbonate diffuses into plasma.
B) At a pulmonary capillary bed:
1. Bicarbonate diffuses from plasma into a red blood cell.
2. Carbonic anhydrase catalyses formation of water and CO2.
3. CO2 diffuses across respiratory membrane into air in an alveolus.
