The nurse educator is reviewing with a group of student nurses the use of hand sanitizers. When is an appropriate time for the student nurse to use hand sanitization rather than antimicrobial soap and water?
 
  A) At the beginning of each shift
  B) When hands are not visibly soiled
  C) After touching blood with a gown
  D) After touching blood or body fluids without gloves

Feedback:
Hand sanitization is adequate if there is no visible soil on the hands and if the nurse has not been in contact with a client's body fluids. Most facilities have containers in many handy locations.
