Internal factors include genetics and hormones in the body. Genetics influence a person's tendency to gain weight and how fat is stored in the body. Genetic disorders account for obesity in 1 of the population. Hormones that influence hunger and eating patterns are leptin and ghrelin. Leptin depresses appetite by acting on areas of the brain that control hunger, and ghrelin stimulates appetite. External factors affecting weight management include dietary choices, amount and type of exercise, stress, and people and locations that are part of our environment. Lifestyle factors are within control of the individual and are the primary factors contributing to the obesity epidemic.
