When a strand of DNA needs to replicate, the double helix splits open, revealing the sequence of nucleotide bases.
Since adenine is always paired with thymine and cytosine is always paired with guanine, the corresponding strand
can be synthesized on each half using the exposed nucleotides as a template. Thus each new strand of DNA is
composed of 50 of the old strand and 50 of a newly synthesized strand. The old DNA is partially conserved.
The enzyme responsible for replication, DNA polymerase, can only add bases at the 3' end, but the replication on
opposing strands is in opposite directions. In the strand being synthesized in the 5' to 3' direction, synthesis is
continuous. In the strand being synthesized in the 3' to 5' direction, synthesis is discontinuous as small pieces of
DNA are synthesized in the 5' to 3' direction and then joined together.
