Sediments were deposited in marine and transitional environments. The only local sediment
source within the Great Plains was the Black Hills in South Dakota. Marine deposition occurred
in this area during the Cretaceous, followed by the origin of terrestrial deposits. Terrestrial
deposits indicate semitropical forests, giving way to grasslands. There are also incidents of
igneous activity.
