Answer: The pathogenesis of gout is better understood than its cause. Gout attacks are related to excess uric acid in blood, which results either from a defect in metabolism of purines (a component of nucleic acids), or from abnormal retention of uric acid, or both. The high uric acid level leads to deposits of uric acid crystals in the joints. Uric acid crystals also deposit in the kidneys, stimulating kidney stone formation and irritating the kidney.
